What just happened?

On August 10, President Trump signed an executive order directing the U.S. government to change its childhood vaccine recommendations to 11 from 17.
Some vaccines will remain recommended for all children, while others will move into different categories. The order also calls for eventually separating the MMR vaccine into three shots: measles, mumps, and rubella.
But a policy change does not automatically mean the science has changed.
Why does the MMR vaccine matter?

MMR protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, three contagious diseases that can cause serious complications.
The CDC says that two doses of MMR provide the best protection against measles. WHO estimates that measles vaccination prevented nearly 59 million deaths worldwide between 2000 and 2024.
The new order recommends eventually separating MMR into three individual vaccines. However, the separate measles, mumps, and rubella products recommended by the order are not currently available in the United States.
What does the research say?
The executive order does not present new clinical evidence showing that routine childhood vaccines are unsafe or that splitting MMR would make it safer.
Some medical organizations have warned that changing long-standing recommendations could create confusion and make vaccination harder.
Meanwhile, measles is still a major global health concern. WHO estimates that about 95,000 people died from measles in 2024.
Why should YOU care?
Vaccines affect more than individual health. They can impact schools, families, communities, and how quickly diseases spread.
This story also shows why health literacy matters: a government policy, a scientific study, and medical consensus are not the same thing.
KEY TAKEAWAY
A change in health policy doesn’t automatically mean the science changed. Always look for the evidence behind the headline.
